Obituary for John V. Carrick

John V. Carrick of Carmel, NY died September 5th, 2018 in Purdys NY at the age of 90.
Mr. Carrick was born on September 4th, 1928 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His family moved shortly thereafter to Brooklyn, New York where he attended grade school at St. Teresa of Avila School. While at St. Teresa he was an altar boy and worked after school to help his family in the difficult years during The Great Depression. After graduation from St. Leonard’s High School in Brooklyn, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He received an Honorable Discharge in late 1949. He also served his country with a tour of duty in the Korean War in 1950-51. He returned home to Brooklyn and shortly thereafter married Nancy Sullivan of Edgewater, New Jersey in September of 1953 with the wedding ceremony taking place at Holy Rosary Church in Edgewater. He and his bride settled in Brooklyn and started having a family with their first child born in November of 1954.
John worked for the Brooklyn Union Gas Company (now known as Keyspan) as a salesman. After working a number of years in this role he joined the New York City Transit Authority in December of 1968 as a Railroad Clerk. He retired from the Transit Authority in December of 1988. In 1970, John and Nancy moved the family from Brooklyn to Lake Carmel, New York. He immersed himself in his new community and was an usher for many years at Saint James Catholic Church. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for over sixty(60) years. Additionally, he was a proud member of The American Legion.
He had many interests including: traveling extensively in his golden years, being an award-winning bowler, avid coin collector, ardent Brooklyn Dodgers/New York Mets’ fan, experienced card player, enjoyed Bingo, Trivia Pursuit and Jeopardy but most of all enjoyed spending his time with family and friends.
His wife, Nancy, predeceased him in 1979. He leaves eight(8) children: John of Carmel, NY, Michael of Carmel, NY, Gerard(wife Janis) of Hopewell Junction, NY, Mary(husband David) of Bennington, VT, Noreen(husband Roger) of Danbury, CT, Geralyn(husband Michael) of Troy, NY, Grace of New York, NY, Therese of Beacon, NY as well as seven grandchildren (David, Michael, Jessica, Stephanie, Kaitlyn, Danny, Justin) and four great grandchildren (Kaidence, Westley, Brycen, Libby).
